Collecting college information can be fun! Using the Internet and sending away for catalogs, students begin researching program offerings at each campus. Encourage your son or daughter to visit a local college to get a "feel" for what campus life is like. They can become familiar with different campus services and staff; admissions, disability support services, book store, recreational facilities. Emphasize to your son or daughter that they are consumers and are shopping for a school to meet their needs. Since every campus is different, it may be important for students to visit the ones they are especially interested in.

Ladders to Success, A Student's Guide to School After High School by Jennifer MacKillop, MSW.

Section 2 provides a general overview of the different types of colleges, a checklist to help students make the most of a college visit, and an outline of application procedures.

The National Center on Educational Statistics, NCES.

The NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing educational data. This site provides statistics on all levels of education. By searching a college of interest information related to enrollment, degree programs, costs, financial aid, housing and campus crime statistics can be obtained.
