Services that were available as an entitlement during high school years may only be available through adult service agencies or by private payment once in college. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the school district is responsible for linkages to possibly appropriate adult agencies; however, it is the student and the family who are ultimately responsible to follow through. To get services from adult agencies, your son or daughter will need to rely on his or her developing self-advocacy skills.

Every agency has policies and procedures. Criteria for services will vary. Most agencies serve individuals based on the severity of limitation or needs. Agencies will screen applicants based on how a disability is limiting. Individuals with greater limitations may be eligible for services first.
