Section 2

This section focuses on how assistive technology (AT) can be used to overcome disability related limitations. Assistive technology is any item or piece of equipment that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. Students begin researching different technologies in ninth grade. Through their research, interviews, and experimentation they become familiar with different types of assistive technology.

There are a several reasons to start this research early in high school:

  • Students who use AT during high school will become accustomed to looking to technology as an accommodation.

  • AT will enable them to be successful in high school classes.

  • Assistive Technology is commonly used to keep up with increased work demands in college.

The goal:

Your son or daughter will become familiar with and understand different technologies that can be used to overcome their limitations.
