Take a moment to reflect on what college is like.
Imagine you are 18 or 19 years old and starting college. Life is
really different now. You might be:
- Living away from home for the first time
- Experiencing a less structured lifestyle
- Working at a part time job
- Spending less time in class, typically 1 - 3 hours a day
- Keeping up with the increased "outside of class" assignments,
typically 3-5 hours a day
- Completing requirements within a 10 week quarter instead of
a semester
- Managing your own academic accommodations
Will you have time to find and learn a new assistive
technology? If you do, will you be able to keep up with your assignments
while you learn to use it? It might be difficult. An early start
will help you as it will your son or daughter. The more complex
the technology, the greater the need to get started early.

For example, if you are accustomed to
having your texts read to you, how quickly will you adjust to using
screen reading technology?
