Working with assistive technology requires self-knowledge. Technology will work best if it takes advantage of strengths while compensating for limitations. Prior to researching AT, students need an understanding of what limitations they want to address. Support from you, teachers, and other professionals will help.

Problem solving assistive technology solutions should be looked at as a life time endeavor. New solutions may be needed as the environmental demands change along with abilities to meet those demands. Developing your son or daughter's problem solving skills will help them meet those ever changing demands. In addition assistive technologies change, new technologies are being developed making others obsolete.

The "teen years" often revolve around fitting in with peers. Students with disabilities may already view themselves as different. Be sensitive to how they feel about using the AT. If they aren't comfortable, the AT won't be used. Talk about how it feels to use equipment. Be open incremental steps that allow your son or daughter to try new devices in a safe setting.
