Students learn the concept of assistive technology (AT) and are asked
if they already use technologies. Sometimes they don't realize that
a device they use is an assistive
technology. For example, perhaps your son has a reading disability
and is used to listening to books on tape. He may not think of a tape
recording as a form of assistive technology, but it is. We want students
to begin to think of ways that technology can help them learn. The
approach that Post-ITT takes is to have them undertake a self-evaluation
and then experiment with different technologies.
Using the
Assistive
Technology Self-Evaluation Guide, students begin by
writing their answers to the question:
What learning
difficulties do you experience in school?
They need to be specific in their answers, which may require them
to reflect on the work they did previously in the Self-advocacy
section. You can help your son or daughter by taking an in-depth
look at the Self-evaluation Guide. Using one of your own
limitations, complete it for yourself to familliarize yourself with
the activity.
