In order for students to begin researching assistive technology
options, they need to have a working knowledge of their limitations
and what they want the AT to do for them. Students begin with Internet
research followed by talking with an AT expert to learn about assistive
technologies.
This research can often feel like trying to find a needle in a
haystack for students who haven't used AT. They may not be sure
what they are looking for. You may want to gather some information
first so you can assist your son/daughter with this research. Not
all of us are technologically up to date. Tap into other resources,
friends or family members who are computer and internet savvy. Some
of the Internet sites allow questions to be submitted. Information
may be found on assistive technology or disability specific Web
sites.
Students continue to record the information on the Assistive
Technology Self-Evaluation Guide. Here are two sites which
will help you begin research:
-
ABLE DATA
is sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation
Research (NIDRR) and provides information on assistive technology related
to specific disabilities
-
Closing the Gap
is focused on computer technology in special education and rehabilitation.
