Students compare disability services and assistive
technology at colleges of interest. Although all colleges follow
the mandates of Section 504 and ADA, each college is responsible
to develop its own policy and procedures. Colleges may vary in how
things are done and what resources are available. These differences
could prove to be very important to students with disabilities.
For example, for blind indivduals or those with learning disabilities;
a common accommodation is recorded books. Some campuses assist students
in obtaining the recordings, while others depend on the student
to obtain what they need through
Recordings
for the Blind and Dyslexic. When students research services
at different college, they need to not only ask if an accommodation
is provided, but how it is provided.
The
George Washington University Web site
for their office of
Disability Support Services offers a clear outline of the services
that are commonly provided
along
with
expectations for students and instructors.
