Activity 40

Qualifying for services can be difficult for students if they leave high school without acceptable documentation of disability. An important point to remember is that the K-12 system needs to address eligibility for special education services through the assessment and mandatory 3 year reassessment process. This may not meet the needs of the college.

The Washington Association of Post secondary Education and Disability (WAPED), is the organization of college disability service coordinators in Washington State. WAPED posts position papers containing documentation guidelines for different disabilities. This activity contains a Worksheet which allows students to compare their documentation with these guidelines. This should not be the last step, students must be sure their disability documentation meets the requirements of the college of interest as laid out in the next 3 activities.

The Disclosure Dilemma for Advocates, Laverne A. Buchanan, Ed.D posted on the HEATH Web site provides useful tips for when and how to disclose a disability.
