Welcome Parents!
This Web course is designed to assist you, in
supporting your child as they prepare for college. The high school
years can be used to prepare for the changes to come. By helping
your child learn about his or her disability and what needs to be
done to get ready for college, you will increase the likelihood
of a successful transition.
Your role will change
as your child gets older. A fair amount of parental prodding may
be needed initially. As skills are learned, your role changes to
one of
mentoring.
Mentoring needs to be based on trust and respect. It can be a challenge
to be supportive while allowing your son or daughter to make his
or her own decisions. When youth reach the age of 18, legally they
have responsibility for themselves. In order to be ready for this
responsibility, students with disabilities may have work to do.
Students may choose to involve their parents or others in their
life decisions. Your role is one that evolves from doing for your
child, to prodding, and finally encouraging.
Generally, colleges expect to work directly with students and will
allow parental involvement only with the student's permission. Therefore,
young adults going through this transition must be prepared to ask
the right questions, discuss their needs, and find solutions to
problems that arise. The Post-ITT Guidance Activities and
Web site
are designed to teach these essential skills during the
high school years. These
resources are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
