Once students have an idea of what they like and what they don't, they continue research with the Occupational Outlook Handbook where they take an in depth look at jobs of interest. It is possible that, due to the disability related limitations, students will not be able to pursue a career interest. This can seem like a set back. You can help your son or daughter relate interests to other possible jobs. For example, the careers: nurse, emergency medical technician and firefighter involve helping people in distress. Perhaps, a student has identified one of these occupations but has difficulty concentrating with a lot of activity going on. These careers may be inappropriate, but other occupations related to helping people may not be. Focusing in on why a particular job is interesting can help expand career choices.
