College students with disabilities must be prepared to take charge of their education. Your son or daughter needs to be an effective advocate for his or her disability related needs. Failing to advocate for ones needs will likely result in no accommodations being available. In addition to requesting accommodations, students are expected to actively monitor their effect and request assistance as needed. Development of these self-advocacy and self-monitoring skills takes time and should start in high school.
