Researching College Programs using School Resources

What Students Do

Students use the Post-ITT Web site, interviews, and school resources to learn about college programs. Using the insights gained through interest inventories, goal setting research and setting their own postsecondary goal; students explore how those goals may be attained through college programs. This activity asks students to use multiple resources because repetition is important in understanding how colleges are different. Repetition with different resources also provides multiple perspectives to their research and an opportunity to compare and contrast what is learned. Finally, repetition of research reinforces that you take the students' goal seriously just as he or she should.

Planning

Review college catalogs in print and on-line to become familiar with the different formats. Meet with your school counselors to learn about college nights, college fairs, parent meetings, and individual college seminars. Chances are good that your school already has many research and exploration opportunities going on that you may not be aware of.

Introducing the Activity

Activity 26 has students research two or three colleges they are interested in based on their career goals. Preparation for this activity should also include reviewing interests, likes, and the results of the interest inventory. Discuss the information that is still accurate and what has changed. After completing the planning section of the Guidance Activities, students should have one or two occupations they want to pursue. Discuss the kind of college program that is appropriate for those careers. Brainstorm different ways people find out about college. Start by asking students to remember how they learned about high school while in junior high or middle school. Have them think back and discuss what they heard others say about high school.

  • Was the information accurate?


  • Who provided the best information?
Guide the discussion with examples that will help them generalize to college. Include talking to others, visiting college campuses, looking through texts, and sitting in on a class.
