College Research through a Campus VisitWhat Students DoActivity 27 extends the research done in Activity 26 by asking students to visit a campus and observe college life first hand. Direct experience of classes, student recreational resources, student study resources, college textbooks, and student support services gives students the first hand experiences they need to help them make the best decisions.
PlanningIf you know which schools your students may be interested in, check to see what materials are available in your counseling office or career center. Try to be knowledgeable about upcoming events sponsored by the college.
Introducing the ActivityActivity 27 asks students to visit a college of interest. This can be intimidating. Explore the student's feelings about visiting a campus and meeting a disability services coordinator. Prepare them for the activity by describing what they might do such as: touring the campus, visiting the bookstore, eating lunch in the student center and sitting in on one or two classes. If students are still hesitant about visiting a college, encourage them to contact DO-IT Pals to get a perspective of somebody who already made that initial visit. Also, consider a class field trip. Some students simply may not be ready to visit a college campus on their own. Consider arranging a group field trip to a local college.
