Disability LawWhat Students DoStudents learn about federal disability laws. Because many of the services and protection that they have benefited from as public school students are no longer applicable in college, it is important to understand what they should expect. The Post-ITT Web site and many others provide the necessary summary information.PlanningBecome familiar with disability laws that pertain to postsecondary education by reading the Disability Law section of the Post-ITT Web site. Speak with a local disability services provider if you have questions about how they meet the requirements of Section 504 and the American with Disabilities Act. The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education should be able to provide definitive answers to any particularly thorny questions. Start with their publication Students with Disabilities Preparing for Postsecondary Education.Introducing the ActivityDiscuss the concepts of right and responsibility. Ask students to brainstorm some of their rights as well as their responsibilities. Have them work in small groups. Start the brainstorming by using examples of rights and responsibilities at home.Move the discussion from home to high school. Use these or other questions to start the discussion Give students specifics about school responsibilities related to their disability. Ask them to speculate on whether they believe they will have the same rights and responsibilities in college. If not, ask them to describe how they think these will change. Activity 36 asks students to compare federal laws that affect how they receive services in high school and in college. Discuss the differences between high school and college. Review what they learned in the Self-advocacy section. After having the above conversations,discuss how the law and responsibilities will change when they enter college.
