College Disability Supports are Different! The Law is DifferentThe Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) does not apply in college. Specially designed instruction and FAPE are not guaranteed. Instead, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act require access to instruction, activities and facilities through academic adjustments and services. In addition, colleges only must serve students qualified for the programs in which they are enrolled. Colleges are DifferentNot all colleges provide the same support services. Students need to know what support they will need and compare colleges to find the best fit. A college may have put an extra effort into a particular type of academic adjustment or a community of students with a particular disability may gravitate to a particular college. Some colleges have programs designed to meet a specific need (often for an additional fee).Students Must Advocate for their Own NeedsStudents must prove they have a disability that requires academic adjustments and services, know what they need, and advocate for those needs.Post-ITT Guidance Activities systematically teach students the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in college. The learning process takes time, ongoing support and a coordinated effort.
