What Students Do

After reviewing the results of their interest inventory (Activity 18), Students research job characteristics using the Occupational Outlook Handbook. They print out the information and organize it into categories. Once their research is complete on one job, they discuss it with a trusted adult and then select a second and perhaps third job for research.

Planning

There are many other resources that might also be used. Be sure to check in with your career center or counseling office for print and online resources that they may have available or know about. Most states have an occupational information system that is specific to their region. See the Association of Computer Based Systems for Career Information for a link to the relevant resources in your state. Activity 19 has a Worksheet to help organize information collected.

Introducing the Activity

Activity 18 had students talk about the results of the interest inventory. Encourage students to discuss how the information is related to their educational goals and how they feel about the occupations. Activity 19 has them research at least one job in the Occupation Outlook Handbook. Depending on the needs of your students, the following questions may help start the conversation.

  • How do you feel about the jobs the interest inventory suggested?

  • Let's imagine for a moment that you didn't have a (state a relevant disability). What jobs would you like to have and why?

  • Do you think you would get bored at those jobs and why?

  • What would be especially interesting about them?

  • Would your limitations make doing those jobs difficult? If so, why?

  • Do the careers you are researching require the skills you have or want to develop?
It is possible that some students are unable to perform the jobs that the interest inventory recommended. Help them find a common theme in the jobs. Consider having the class or group review the same occupation as a group. Use this activity to explain what each heading in the Occupational Outlook Handbook means. Use the computers in the career center or computer lab.
